Callinectes sapidus is native to the western Atlantic. One adult female was collected at Marina di Grado on 4 October 1949 and correctly identified decades later, in 1993. The record is a specimen, not a legend.

For decades, encounters along the Italian coast remained scattered. The recent expansion across the northern Adriatic changed the scale of the story.

In the Po Delta, an introduced predator met a working landscape of fishing and mollusc farming. We must read the ecological damage before making it into a story.

In the 2–5 October 2023 field survey, ARPAV and ISPRA found 98–100% Manila clam mortality at the sampled Canarin stations and 85–99% at Scardovari. Numerous shells showed signs consistent with blue crab predation.

These are site-specific findings, not a claim about every year or every lagoon. Regione Veneto later proposed the exceptional spread of this invasive alien species as a natural disaster for 2023.
